ON PAR WITH WOODS

ON PAR WITH TIGERRORY McIlroy has again split with his long-time girlfriend Holly Sweeney and has embarked on a relationship with world tennis No 1 Caroline Wozniacki.

Sources close to McIlroy confirmed that he has formed a close friendship with the 21-year-old Danish tennis star after meeting her at the David Haye and Wladimir Klitschko heavyweight boxing fight in Hamburg on July 2. The young Northern Irish Golfer, widely tipped to be the next Tiger Woods, seems to be following his idols example both on and off the fairway. Only just the other day Tiger was overheard remarking to McIlroy ‘fancy 18 holes" before they both jumped onto John Daly's stripper bus.

McIlroy's next engagement is rumoured to be a double date with Ireland's most recent British Open winner Darren Clarke... and his new missus Martina Navratilova.

SHAY’S GIVEN FREEDOM

OBVIOUSLY we stopped believing a word that came out of Joe Kinnear's mouth long ago, but even he would have to admit this quote he gave on December 31st about Shay Given's future may have been ever so slightly misguided.
"He won't be leaving - he has no interest in that whatsoever. He loves the football club - he's part of the city and that suits us because he's world-class."
Well unfortunately Joe, he's now a world class keeper who plays for Manchester City.
The £6m Irish No1 said the prospect of "going places" with Man City persuaded him to move from Newcastle.
If by places he means the Coca-Cola Championship, he may very well be in luck.
The 32-year-old, who played 461 games for Newcastle after joining them
in 1997, said: "It's exciting times at City with the new owners and this manager. There are big plans for the club, it's a new chapter in my life and one I'm looking forward to.
"There is already the nucleus of a very good team here and I hope to add to that. From a football point of view, and a club point of view, it's an easy thing to sell as we know we are going in the right direction."
We're not sure City's long-suffering fans would agree, but giddy Given was so thrilled he revealed he did not sleep a wink the night before his first training session, adding: "I was so excited I couldn't sleep. It's like being a kid at a new school."
We suppose it's fair enough. City are no great shakes, but if we had to react to the fuck ups by the likes of Cacapa, Marcelinho, Pistone and Bramble for 12 years, we'd be excited about moving too.

DUBLIN'S CUP OF CHEER

YOU certainly don't get to use the phrases ‘sporting success' and ‘boost to the economy' much about Ireland - so when this week the two could be used in the same sentence, it was as rare as a pass along

STEVE’S BALLS COURT, BY TRAP

THE will-he-won't-he-oh-just-get-on-with-it saga surrounding Stephen Ireland's international career rumbles on this week with the Man City winger claiming the ball is firmly in Giovanni Trapattoni's court.
The only problem with that is, Gio says the ball's firmly in the player's court.
So while the pair of them are left looking for each others balls, the inevitble conclusion is, neither of them have any.
