Catch DogTV In The US

tv-dog-dominoDogTV is being hailed as a new breed of programming by TV chiefs. It's an on-demand cable TV channel designed to keep your dog relaxed, stimulated and entertained while you are out.

The first channel of its kind, DogTV debuted in February 2012 as a free, around-the-clock service on cable and on-demand in San Diego. It has programmes ranging from exciting activities and stimulation to relaxation. The shows are scientifically tailored for canine audiences, with the sound, colours and camera angles adjusted to make them more appealing to our four legged friends. The stars of DogTV are dogs themselves.

Beke Lubeach, head of marketing for DogTV, said about the fans "They love watching other dogs being active on the screen, and other animals," and added that birds, monkeys and zebras have proven popular as well.

Two months after it was released locally in California, the cable channel has now been launched online and is geared for national distribution.

Being pure entertainment for dogs, the channel is really geared at pet owners who are concerned about leaving their little companions alone at home while they are out for long periods of time at work and so on. DogTV offers "a promise to our beloved best friends that they should never again feel alone."

The channel is ad free, presumably because dogs are not usually responsible for purchasing decisions in the home but Lubeach said DogTV hopes to have a US distribution deal in place within the next couple of months, when they would begin to charge subscribers about $5 (£3) a month.

DogTV has become a big hit at the Humane Society Animal Shelter in Escondido, where they began airing the channel throughout the facility.
Sally Costello, executive director of the Escondido Humane Society says "The shelter has seen a marked improvement in all the dogs who have been exposed to DogTV,"
They currently house 115 dogs.

Dancing Burglar Identified By Signature Steps

duck-tour-galvestoneA teen has been arrested in Galveston, Texas for robbing a Duck Tour vehicle.

The youth was seen on CCTV camera before committing the crime, but he was identified from his signature dance moves.

The 16 year old is known to regularly practice in the halls of his high school and the dance is easily recognisable to anyone who knows him.

The crime was committed along with two adults who sprayed the interior of the amphibious vehicle with a fire extinguisher.

When the boy was found to not be in class the following day, police confronted him with his mother at home with the surveillance tape, where she demanded to know what he was doing in the video.
His reply was "That's my swag, mama."

I Shot The Hole in One, But I Did Not Shoot the Birdie

golf-teeGolf fan and sheriffs captain Jeff Donahue couldn't believe his luck when he found out that inmate Frank Carrillo was a pro golfer before he turned jewel thief.

He decided to take Carillo from the jail in the city of Avalon on Catalina Island, where he was serving his sentence, to a nearby golf course to get some pointers on his swing and reduce his double digit handicap.

The free golf lessons turned out to be pretty costly for Donahue though when he was found out. Deputy William Cordero, divulged the story to higher-ups and now Donahue is under investigation for inappropriate fraternising with an inmate.

It turns out that Donahue had not received the necessary high-level clearance needed for taking prisoners outside of the jail and had also lied on jail records by saying that Carillo stayed at the jail the entire day.

Donahue has since gone on medical leave, but Carillo doesn't deny the story.

He said:
"He was amazing to me. He kind of has this swing that's old school and risky, but he hits it every time. I would probably say he's a 14 or 15 handicap. Not too bad."

Mr Gay World Crowned Queen in Africa

andreas-derlrth-32-of-new-zealandGay controversy struck when it was announced that the Mr Gay World competition was to be held this year (2012) in Johannesburg in South Africa.

Though South Africa is one of the few places on the continent that homosexuality is accepted, 38 out of the 54 countries regard it as a crime, particularly Sudan, Mauritania and Northern Nigeria where it carries the death penalty. Despotic President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe has been quoted as saying "gays are worse than dogs and pigs". I'm not sure in what ways he is referring to. Pigs probably taste better than gays, but I think gays have the edge on cleanliness.

In a place where lesbians are subject to ‘corrective rape' it's hardly surprising that Mr Gay Ethiopia was disowned by his father and Mr Gay Zimbabwe withdrew for fear of publicity affecting his mother.

On the flip side, Mr Gay Namibia Wendelinus Hamutenya said his mother told him to ‘bring the trophy home'. He expressed how he felt that this showed that Africans could change and hoped that his country would be the second African country to accept homosexuals. He said he would return to Namibia and fight for "for gay rights and human rights". Possibly a part of him doesn't believe that gays and humans are the same thing.

Hamutenya was one of three African contestants to participate, the third being Lance Weyer or Mr Gay South Africa - a white guy - who came in as first runner up to Mr Gay New Zealand Andreas Derleth.

Organiser Coenie Kukkuk insisted that Mr. Gay World is not a beauty pageant. It includes an essay test on the history of the gay rights movement. Admittedly the swim suit competition counts for more.

Cary Alan Johnson, executive director of the New York-based International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission, worries such glitzy contests feed stereotypes that could cement the view that homosexuality is un-African.
"Most of us are of colour, poor, don't look like we go to the gym regularly," Johnson said in an interview. "Class does matter. It is poor men who experience the most oppression."

He gave Mr. Gay World credit for drawing attention to discrimination against gays, particularly in Africa but said that during his visit to Johannesburg, he was dismayed to find the advertising featured two white men - the South Africans who won Mr. Gay World in 2011 and 2010. He said:

"The one thing they ought to do is change that poster, have one black guy up there with no shirt on. Cater to a diverse audience."

Is that a diverse audience Mr Johnson or your own personal taste for hot chocolate?

Kite Surfer Vs Shark Squad

Kite Surfer Vs Shark SquadPolish Kite Surfer Jan Lisewski was two thirds of the way through a 124 mile journey across the Red Sea when tragedy struck. The wind died.

The lack of wind deflated his kite, leaving him all but stranded.

Having travelled a fair distance from El Gouna in Egypt on his way to Duba in Saudi Arabia, he was a long way from land and safety. He waited an hour and half hoping that the wind might pick up again so he could go on. When it did not he sent out an SOS signal to alert the coastguard to come for him. Three hours later he tried again. His wait for rescue was to last 40 hours.

While he waited he survived on energy drinks, energy bars and water. But hunger and thirst were not the only dangers in the water.

Probably attracted by the bright colours of his kite, several attempts were made by a number of sharks to make a meal of him. Sharks ranging in size from 2.5 metres to 6!

Fortunately for Lisewski, his brother Piotr had convinced him to take a knife along with him. Jan believes Piotr had acted on premonition, but who knows.

Lisweskis battle with the sharks lasted all night before he was finally saved. He claims to have fought off eleven sharks, while others circled but kept their distance.
