Well that was a letdown! After a summer of everyone building up the clash between England and India as the battle for global supremacy, the Indian facade was destroyed much like the scene in the Wizard of Oz when the infamous Wizard is revealed to be operated by a little man.
Take nothing away from the England cricket team and hats off to Andrew Strauss and his men for simply beating what was put in front of them but this India is nowhere near the best side in the world, and that is comprehensively proved pretty much every day (that didn’t rain!)
The fallout has already begun in the Indian press (never one to take cricketing defeats very well) and the reaction has evoked memories of yesteryear when the England cricket team were humbled and disgraced by the Australians and the Ashes were born.
An Indian tabloid displayed a large gravestone with the epitaph: “RIP Indian cricket. In affectionate remembrance of Indian Cricket which died at The Oval on 22 August 2011. Deeply lamented by a large circle of 1.2 billion friends and acquaintances. The body will be cremated and the ashes remain at The Oval. Forever.”
Have we seen the advent of a new Ashes series? The Indians will want to take something from the series at least!
