Time for an Indian Summer? |
So the much anticipated clash between England and India finally got underway this week (can anyone tell me why such a prominent test series is starting at the end of July?!) and it certainly didn't disappoint - if you are English...
A return to form for Kevin Pietersen with a typically commanding double hundred and the rest of the South African born English contingent; Strauss, Trott and Prior performing admirably with the bat in both innings. It was a major disappointment for many lovers of the game that ‘the Little Master' could not complete what unbelievably would have been his maiden test century at the home of cricket (chalk another one up to the idiosyncrasies of sport!) Sadly Tendulkar and the rest of the much vaunted Indian batting line-up failed to fire outside of the subcontinent once again. Indian captain, MS Dhoni's assertion in his post match interview that the players were batting in unfamiliar positions (you still have to use the bat, pal!) was weak at best and will not wash a second time. It was also great to see a final day of test cricket played to such a full house albeit at the expense of having usually reserved and demure fans of cricket behaving like teenage X-Factor hopefuls prepared to queue overnight for tickets! No time to rest though with the bandwagon rolling on to Trent Bridge for Friday morning to do it all again as England look to continue their climb to the top of the Test tree. Whilst this England side certainly doesn't conjure up the images and fear of the 1970's and 1980's West Indian sides or the Australian team of the 90's brimming with individual talent, this generation have come to realise that the sum of the parts is the most important aspect to becoming a great test side. Indian fans will be hoping that their boys can find the winning formula and fast.
