Unknown

ONE of the most underappreciated films of 2008 was the amazing Taken. Those moronic slumdogs had nothing on Liam Neeson kicking ass and taking names around France to find his kidnapped daughter.

Well he’s back in this quasi-sequel that sees him play Dr. Martin Harris, who is stuck in a coma while in Germany only to realise, once he wakes up, that a man has taken his identity and - gasp! - even his wife doesn’t believe him.

Directed by Collet-Serra, who was responsible for another underappreciated gem in Orphan, Unknown is fast-paced but remains gritty, using the dodgy German locations to create a real foreign atmosphere which adds to the mystery of the film’s plot. There’s a real intense, hard-hitting fight scene that’s really well-filmed and reminds me of the awesome fight in From Russia With Love that took place in a tiny quarters on a train. It could be the highlight of the film, actually.

Surprisingly, the explanation for the identity theft is satisfying and not entirely implausible (especially compared to a crazy over-the-top car chase mid-film) which caps off a really enjoyable film that will help ease the wait for Taken 2’s release sometime soon. 3.5 / 5
