Travel Thredbo

Australia

Whether threbo imageyou are after winter skiing or summer hiking, Thredbo in Kosciuszko National Park provides the rugged mountains and alpine climate in which to have the perfect holiday in New South Wales.

Located 500 kilometres south of Sydney in the Snowy Mountains, Thredbo is not what you would generally expect from Australia, snow has been recorded in all months and their ski season runs from June till October.

Thredbo boasts 50 plus ski runs, including the longest runs in Australia, and has been designed in the style of a European skiing town which means quaint snow topped lodges with roaring fires litter the area.

The thing that separates Thredbo from other resorts in the Snowy Mountains though, such as Perisher Blue in Perisher Valley, is that being a town as well as a ski resort means there is plenty of shopping and nightlife to enjoy when you are all skied out.

The activities don't stop at skiing, drinking and shopping either, the guided hikes to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko are very popular as it is Australia's highest peak at 2228 meters above sea level.

thredbo imageFor those who fancy something a little more down to earth (or in this case bellow it) you could visit the Yarrangobilly Caves a network of 60 sandstone caves with tours available all year.

The local accommodation caters for all budgets and tastes, for the backpackers the Thredbo YHA offers a cheap choice, whilst the Novotel Lake Crackenback Resort on the other hand with their over-water apartments represents the other end of the scale.

In summer months, the mountains attract a large number of tourists who come to enjoy white-water rafting, abseiling and climbing, horse-riding and fishing on the nearby Lakes Jindabyne and Eucumbene which are extremely popular for canoeing and water-skiing, with the Australian Water-skiing Championships held on Lake Jindabyne every year.
